Happy Birthday Beppi and Bon Voyage

9-1-1920 to 8-27-2012 Beppi Passed away peacefully in his sleep a few days short of his 92nd Birthday. Happy Birthday Beppi and Bon Voyage and give our love to Elsa.

Bon Voyage Beppi

I first met Beppi at one of our ACR meetings at Volpi’s Restaurant. He had a camera with him and was taking pictures for his own pleasure. We struck up a conversation and (like most folks in the ACR) he proved to be a a really nice and interesting fellow.

It didn’t take him long to volunteer to take the photographer’s duties from the retiring Bill White. Beppi was involved in several clubs and not too many folks know this, but he gave up his duties at one of the other clubs to come and take pictures for us every month.

We worked together for many years, Beppi taking pictures while I edited the Reedwooder. I would drive up to Beppi’s home in Santa Rosa and pick up the pictures he took. I would always leave an hour and a half (or more) to visit with Beppi and his wife Elsa. That hour and a half was always spent going over the pictures he took and chatting about anything that came to mind.

I cherished our time together as Beppi told me of his childhood in Italy, his tour of duty in WWII, memories of old Santa Rosa and his teacher who travelled from San Francisco to teach in Sonoma county. These were but a few of the stories he told me while Elsa served coffee and cream.

Beppi allowed me to be able to slow down and examine life; his and mine. As I rushed headlong through my daily activities, my visits with Beppi and Elsa allowed me to stop and take life a little slow and enjoy the company of two wonder folks.

Beppi thanks for being my friend, thanks for sharing your time with me.
Thanks for the memories.

Anthony Berger

Our first entertainer of the evening was young Anthony Berger who treated us to four selections on his new 120 bass accordion.  Anthony has been studying for only a few months, but each time he plays for us it is evident that he has a talent for the accordion and is progressing so fast due to his natural ability and his love of music.  Keep up the good work Anthony and come play for as again soon.

CIMG1365

Ed Sciarini

Cotati brings accordionist from all over to Sonoma County every year. This year we were fortunate that it brought my friend Ed Sciarini from our sister club in Stockton here and that he decided to stay over an extra day to play for our August meeting. Calling on his Italian-Swiss heritage, Ed played a trio of Italian-Swiss songs which were new to most of us. When called on for an encore he played the Harry Gay favorite Ialupi, Ialupi. Thanks for stopping in Ed. We hope to see you again in the near future.

CIMG1368

Guy Richards

Our third performance of the evening was by Guy Richards.  Guy, who is an tremendously accomplished musician started out the evening by playing with the ACR fun band.  We hope to have him repeat this again whenever he is able.  As usual, Guy took requests from the audience and treated us to a variety of songs including a very intricate and chord rich rendition of Temptation and a great rendition of Malaguena.  As always he was a real crowd pleaser.  Every time Guy plays for us I am amazed that the accordion is not really his primary instrument.  Thanks for sharing your talent with us Guy.

CIMG1379

Ron Borelli

Our final and featured performer of the evening was Ron Borelli. Ron treated us to a selection which ran the gamut from polka and jazz improvisation to a Henry Mancini medley and an original interpretation of E Lucevano Le Stelle from the 1900 Puccini opera La Tosca. It was a true pleasure to hear Ron display his mastery of the accordion is several different genres of music. We hope to see him play for our club at his earliest convenience. Ron should definitely be a featured performer in any event which features the accordion. Are you listening in Cotati?

The Presidents Message

Tony Mustaro

Hi Folks,

Once again our annual ACR picnic is behind us and we had a good turnout for our new location with good food and great music and everyone seemed to have a good time.  A big thank you again to Jeanne and Finn for allowing us to hold this year’s picnic at their ranch.  Thank you also to all of the volunteers who worked to make this year’s picnic happen and to the musicians who played for our entertainment.

Now on to the annual Cotati Accordion Festival.  It looks like we have a good lineup of entertainment this year.  Don’t forget three of Joan Traverso’s students who played for our meeting a couple of months ago will be performing on the Cotati stage this year: Christopher and William Steffan and David Hayward.  Let’s get out and cheer them on in their Cotati debut. Also performing this year will be the band from our sister club Golden State led by Club president Carole Enneking.

Of course our own Steve Balich and his band will have everyone dancing in the Polka Tent as they have been doing since the very first Cotati Accordion Festival twenty-two years ago.

It should be a good time for all who attend so try to make time to spend Saturday August 18 or Sunday August 19 attending this accordion event.  You can even attend both days if you want!  Just remember to get your tickets from one of our volunteers who are selling pre-event tickets to the festival for our club.  Our club treasury earns $2 dollars for every ticket we sell and you can also save $2 on each one-day ticket you purchase from the club.  This is a triple win situation when you buy your tickets from the ACR ahead of time:  The club earns $2, you save $2 on the cost of the ticket, and you don’t have to stand in line to buy your ticket on the day you attend.  Your can purchase your tickets from m Cathy Patton at (707) 792-0944 or Art or Carola Clark (707) 584-5800.  Remember that our monthly meeting is the day AFTER Cotati this year so you need to contact someone before the August meeting to buy discounted advance tickets, but there is still an excellent reason for you to attend the August meeting.  Our featured performing artist for the month of August will be Ron Borelli.  Ron is a very busy and talented musician and we are extremely fortunate to have him play for us this month, so make it a point to attend the meeting and show him our appreciation.
I look forward to seeing you at Cotati.

ACR Picnic 2013

News, August 2012

Note from the Editor
I do not know if anyone noticed how few us stepped to volunteer to set up and break down the picnic? I noticed afterward how guilty I was for not asking if help was needed. We need to change that. We are depending to much on others doing the work and we just enjoy. Lets change that!

The President’s Message

Tony Mustaro

Dear Friends,

It’s ACR picnic time!  Once again the time for our annual picnic has arrived, and this year we have a great new location for the event.  This year’s menu will consist of home made Italian sausage served with bell peppers and onions, pasta al pesto, great rolls from the French bakery in Sonoma, salad and desert.  Of course beverages will be provided as well.  Soft drinks, bottled water and keg beer will be included while they last, and we haven’t run short yet.  You are welcome to bring any other beverages of your choice.

Dancing will be on a large wooden dance floor in a completely covered barn with one end open to the air.  There will be musical entertainment during the picnic and Steve Balich and his band will play for dancing.  Come on in and dance and when you need a rest find a place to sit on one of the bales of straw which will surround the dance floor.

The new location has ample shade and ample parking spaces.  It’s easy to get to – just off of Highway 116.  The ground is flat and level and a great place to stroll around and greet your friends.  This is a great opportunity to support your club and your club treasury while you have a good meal and a good time.  Bring a guest or two.  The picnic is open to all members and their friends and it is one of the three fund raising events we sponsor each year to help defray the clubs operational costs which cannot be covered by your annual dues alone.  Your officers and board members are working hard to keep your club financially healthy.  You can help by supporting these events and you’ll have a good time in the bargain.  Officers and board members will be circulating throughout the day, so if you are a new member come up and say hello and let us know what you think of your club.

If you are a player and would like to perform at the picnic please give me a call and let me know. Next month is August and that means the Cotati Accordion Festival is here again.  You can purchase your tickets for Cotati from club volunteer Cathy Patton. This will save you from standing in line and each ticket that we sell earns a donation to our club treasury, so be sure to see Cathy or one of her helpers for your tickets.

Our featured entertainer for the month of August will be great musician and all around good guy Ron Borelli.  More about this in the next issue, but remember not to miss the August meeting.

Finally, I would like to send out a huge thank you to Hanna Sweet, widow of our late friend Norman Sweet for her generous accordion donation to our club.  Thank you Hanna, we appreciate your generosity.

First up was the younger of the Steffan brothers, Christopher, on his Giulietti accordion.  Christopher did an outstanding job on some ethnic numbers: a Tarantella, Mexican Hat Dance, Little Brown Jug, and closed with America The Beautiful.  He gets  better each time we hear him play.

CIMG1197_1

After his set, Christopher turned the Giulietti over to older brother William Marcus Steffan who gave us rousing renditions of Beer Barrel Polka (Rosamunda) and El Ranch Grande followed by a lovely treatment of Santa Lucia.  William is a natural showman and always a crowd pleaser.

CIMG1200_1

Performing after William was David Hayward who has been playing the accordion for five years.  He plays a Silvertone accordion and he plays it very well.  He performed two accordion classics Accordion Rhythm and Nola for his first two numbers and then went all Mozart on us with Rondo Alla Turca.  David loves to play and the audience loves to hear him.  Christopher, William and David will all be performing at Cotati this year at 10:30 AM on August 19th.

CIMG1203_1

Our next performer of the evening was Olga Fensler who has been playing for about one and one-half years.  Olga began lessons as an adult motivated by here love of accordion music which she tells us is very popular in Russia.  She did an outstanding performance of three Russian folk songs.  Keep us the good work Olga, and please come play for us again soon.

CIMG1205_1CIMG1207_1

The last performers of the evening were Sheri Mignano, who was joined later in her set by John Covanelli. Sheri opened with a beautiful and sensitive rendition of Percy Faith’s theme from A Summer Place, followed by Vola Colomba and Le Retour des Hirondelles.  John then joined her to duet with Tango Delle Rose to close out the first half of our program.

CIMG1209_1CIMG1217_1

Our featured performer for the night was Joe Domitrowich.  Joe began his set playing a wireless Petosa Milennium Reedless accordion as he moved around the room  playing  an Italian medley which included music from The Godfather, followed by Sunrise Sunset from Fiddler on the Roof, Just Because, Sentimental Journey and Comet Valse.  He then put down his Petosa to pick up his Concerto and gave us Czardas, Habanera, Wien Du Stadt Meiner Traume, Moliendo Cafe, Jambalaya, In the Mood, a Medley of Standards, Mambo #5, Perez Prado’s  Patricia, He Slavko, closing with Train Ride. It’s always fun to have Joe play his eclectic mix for us.  We are looking forward to hearing him again.
Thank you Joe.
